It is important that we embrace our history as we embark on a path to a positive and bright future
Cambridge’s Mayor, Doug Craig
A rich history has illuminated the path to the urban environment that is being created today.
The Gaslight District pays homage to Cambridge’s historic presence during the 1800’s when the steetscapes were graced with the soft luminance cast from the warm glow of gas lampposts crafted by the former Galt Gas Light Company.
Today, The Gaslight District is envisioned to be a thriving hub in a revitalized urban core, graced with the same vintage details from its former days. The development will be an adaptive reuse of the historic structures combined with new buildings that will respect the historic architectural components and materials to craft a stunning street presence. New life will be breathed into the Galt core all the while respecting and preserving the heritage indefinitely.
Back to the River is a vision to enhance access and diversify development along the Grand River throughout Cambridge.
Mayor Doug Craig and the City of Cambridge are emphasizing the theme Back to the River for future development throughout the City.
The Grand River has long been the center of Galt, with industry and commerce both being centralized around the river. As is common with all river cities in today’s day and age, industry has long since left the city’s core, leaving opportunities to reinvent neighbourhoods. Using the river as a backdrop for the future of Galt, Cambridge is in the process of finalizing a new pedestrian bridge. Integrated lighting of the bridges and a walkway along the river are key elements of his vision. Additional investments include the Idea Exchange in the former Galt Post Office, the renovation of the Water Street parking lot and street-scaping plans as projects geared to invigorate the City’s downtown core area. Following years of investment in Galt, where retaining the original architecture and charm of the historic buildings promises to create a vibrant and unique community that will continue to draw people in.
“We need to develop partnerships, attract new businesses, and build community infrastructure to lay the ground work and create an environment for job creation and a high quality of life for citizens” says Mayor Craig. “It is important that we embrace our history as we embark on a path to a positive and bright future”.

Times are changing. Vibrant urban neighbourhoods are expanding and thriving, a shift to condo and apartment living is underway and cities are investing in their downtown core infrastructure. Cities are in demand of, but lack newly built energy efficient homes and state of the art amenities.
We seek thriving communities where well-designed spaces and building architecture adds significantly to the live, work, play lifestyle. Meshing new growth in highly desirable neighbourhoods provides more housing choice and needed density to support creative business and restaurants. Together they achieve vibrant walkable and transit-oriented communities and this is equally important in reducing our environmental footprint for future generations.
